November 6th, 2015 – For immediate release

Although the cold weather is fast approaching, bicycles continue to be a target for thieves.

In September of 2015, the Department of University investigated 4 reports of stolen bicycles from areas across Carleton University campus. In October of 2015, 5 additional reports were taken of stolen bicycles. In 8 of the cases a cable lock had been used to secure the bicycle while 1 had a metal chain.

The Campus Safety Services encourages all cyclists to consider the following suggestions to prevent your bicycle from becoming the next target:

  • Secure your bicycle with a “U-Shaped” bicycle lock. U-Locks are arguably the most secure way to lock your bicycle and are difficult to cut.
  • Lock your bicycle to a proper bicycle rack in a visible, high traffic area.
  • Remove all accessories including seats, bags and lights. Accessories can also be targets for thieves.
  • Remove the front wheel and secure it with the back wheel and bicycle frame to the bicycle rack.

For an even higher level of security, consider using the access-controlled, camera monitored bicycle compound located by the Physical Recreation Centre which is available to all students, faculty or staff.
