The IBM Personal Computer XT, often shortened to IBM PC/XT or simply XT, was the second computer in IBM’s Personal Computer line, released on March 8, 1983. The XT’s inclusion of a built-in hard drive marked a fundamental shift in personal computing storage solutions, setting expectations for future computers regarding speed and capacity. The XT was an incremental improvement over the original IBM PC model 5150 from 1981, with several key enhancements.

Hardware Specifications:

  • CPU: Intel 8088 @ 4.77 MHz
  • Memory: Initially 128 KB, later versions had 256 KB, and finally 640 KB
  • Storage: 10 MB Seagate ST-412 hard drive (a significant addition)
  • Floppy Drive: 5.25″ 360 KB
  • Expansion Slots: Increased from 5 to 8 (compared to the original PC)
  • Power Supply: Upgraded to 130 watts

Operating System:

  • Shipped with PC DOS 2.0, which offered improved floppy disk formatting (180KB/360KB capacity)

Display Options:

  • Monochrome Display Adapter (MDA) or Color Graphics Adapter (CGA)
