Monday, February 23, 2026 from 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm

Black hair has long existed at the intersection of identity, culture, politics, and resistance. Curls & Coils: The Politics of Black Hair in Canada invites students, staff, and community members to engage in an open and meaningful conversation about the social and political realities surrounding Black hair and how these experiences shape everyday life.

This panel discussion will explore how Black hair influences experiences in schools, workplaces, media, and public spaces, while also celebrating hair care as a site of creativity, community, and cultural expression. Through shared stories and dialogue, panelists will reflect on themes of professionalism, self-expression, discrimination, acceptance, and resilience, highlighting how hair care practices remain deeply connected to identity, dignity, and belonging within Black communities.

Participants will have the opportunity to listen, reflect, and engage in conversation as we examine how policies, social norms, and beauty standards continue to impact Black individuals across Canada, while also recognizing salons, barbershops, and hair care spaces as important sites of community care and connection.

Whether you come to learn, share, or simply listen, all are welcome to join this community-centred discussion.

Hosted in collaboration with RISE Centre, CUSA, PAPM, BSPA, and The ACB Experience.

Free goodie bags will be available for the first 30 registrants.
