Background

In 1984-85 the Friends of the Department of Art History inaugurated its Odyssey Scholarship program to provide outstanding full-time Art History students with the funds to embark on an independent study trip relevant to their on-campus studies and related to their future plans in the discipline. The Odyssey Scholarship is now dedicated to helping full-time graduate students in Art History who need to travel for research purposes.

The Odyssey Scholarship Competition

Graduate students will be notified by email early in the fall term about the upcoming application dates. The email will include the necessary application form. The winner will be announced just after the end of the winter term, and the scholarship will be available for use any time between June 1 and September of that year.  The amount to be awarded will also be announced in the email notice.

Students wishing to apply for this scholarship must fill out the Application Form and attach a detailed research proposal (3 pages or less).  This proposal should include the following information: where you wish to travel, what precisely you plan on seeing, how those visits relate directly to your area of study, and a rough budget.

Your application will be submitted to the Friends’ Odyssey Scholarship Committee, headed by the Graduate Supervisor, Art History, which will review the applications.  The care and thoughtfulness with which they have been prepared will be taken into consideration. It should be noted that an oral presentation or written paper summarizing your trip is expected to be submitted to the Friends.  In this regard there will be a contractual obligation accompanying the award.  The written presentation is to be submitted by mid-September.  If the student elects the oral presentation option, s/he must consult the Chair, Steering Committee, Friends of Art History, no later than mid-August to schedule a presentation during the Friends’ annual lecture series.
