Regular faculty are full-time academic staff hired to do research, teach courses, and undertake other less-formally-scheduled teaching activities, including but not limited to thesis supervision, directed studies and tutorials, participation on graduate examination committees, etc., as well as various administrative responsibilities of an academic nature.

Visiting scholars are researchers based in and funded by other academic institutions, or government departments or agencies, or private-sector consultancies who have been invited by the Provost on the recommendation of the Chair to be resident for a period of time in the Department for the purposes of contributing to and enriching its intellectual life and research endeavours.

Contract instructors are part-time academic staff hired to teach on a course-by-course basis. Applications for future contract instructor opportunities are accepted year round by the Chair who maintains them as a pool of candidates from which to draw as departmental needs arise. In addition, the Department is compelled by the CUPE 4600 Unit 2 Collective Agreement to advertise formally for such positions twice a year (in mid-December and early May) by means of an announcement on the Home page of this Web site.

Administrative staff are full- or half-time employees hired to facilitate the multi-faceted, day-to-day operation of the University.
