This award honours the memory of the late Muriel Foulger. A long time member of the university community, Muriel first joined Carleton’s MacOdrum Library in the 1970s. She became head of circulation in 1973. In 1978 she transferred to the Academic Advisory Office where she would counsel thousands of students for the next decade.

In addition to her work at Carleton, Muriel avidly pursued her academic interests. She attained her BA in Art History, followed by a BA with high honours in Classical Civilization and Art History. She also obtained her certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL).

Muriel, both an observer and practitioner of art, found inspiration in travel. Throughout her life, she visited every continent but Antarctica, often venturing out on her own. She returned from each of her trips with a collection of sketches, watercolours, photographs, anecdotes and observations on the cultures she encountered. The body of work she had created was displayed in a number of art exhibits.

Her family, Peter and Judith Foulger, and friends established the Muriel Foulger Art History Travel Award in honour of her memory in 1992. The award perpetuates Muriel’s love of and commitment to both art and travel, by providing funding for Art History students to pursue research interests outside of the National Capital Region. Subsequently, the endowment has been enlarged through additional gifts from alumni and friends of the Art History program.

The Muriel Foulger Art History Travel Award

The award is intended to enrich the student experience by enabling undergraduate and graduate students to engage in Art History in concrete ways. The award is bestowed upon deserving students who require financial assistance for travel costs associated with research trips intended to further their studies. *For the 2021-22 academic year while travel will be limited and/or not possible due to COVID-19, this award can be used to cover conference fees for online/virtual conferences.

Opportunities for advancement of knowledge may include:

  • Examining works of art in person
  • Conducting primary research outside of Ottawa
  • Attending conferences
  • Visiting special exhibitions


  • Undergraduate students majoring in Art History or History and Theory of Architecture, and graduate students pursuing advanced degrees in Art and/or Architectural History.

Selection Process

The award is conferred on the recommendation of the Director of the School for Studies in Art and Culture (or designate).

The application period is now OPEN for the 2021-22 award. Deadline to apply is March 15, 2022 at 12:00 p.m.
