Antique, Early Christian, and Medieval Syria as it Was:
An Architectural Historian/Photographer’s Journey in 1998
An avid photographer since the late 1950s, Pierre du Prey’s passion fully came into focus when it meshed with his professional career as an architectural historian. In 1998, in preparation for his Architecture in the Classical Tradition website, he undertook a scholarly trip to visit and photograph the chief monuments of Syria. His collection of over 650 color slides from that visit, now digitized and housed at Carleton University, record in brilliant detail the ancient, early Christian, and medieval sites he studied. From each of those time periods du Prey will share a selection of images that especially document buildings subsequently damaged or completely obliterated during the devastating civil unrest that has plagued Syria in recent years.
