Friends of Art History Lecture Series

The Friends of Art History was an organization founded in 1982 by the late Professor Clifford Brown. The initial concept was to offer a series of special lectures to a group of financially comfortable individuals with an interest in art, in exchange for their donations to the Department of Art History. These donations enabled the Department to subsidize participation in study trips to cities such as New York, Washington and Boston by cash-challenged undergraduate students. Over the years the range of activities supported by members’ contributions expanded and contracted, along with the membership itself, until the organization was dissolved in 2018.

Two annual academic achievement awards, one each at the undergraduate and graduate level and one research travel bursary, the Odyssey Scholarship, continue to be awarded annually. Anyone interested in contributing to these funds is encouraged to so by visiting the following website and selecting the relevant Carleton fund:

Since 1982 scores of distinguished art historians, curators, art dealers and artists have given lectures at Friends’ meetings (typically six per academic year). In honour of Professor Clifford Brown and the Friends’ organization, we will continue to offer the lecture series, keeping the name of the series unchanged.
