Destiny Kirumira, a PhD candidate in the School of Architecture at McGill University, researches and teaches on Black architectural history and the intersections of race, memory, and the built environment. Her doctoral research examines the architecture of Black settlements in Canada between the late eighteenth and early twentieth centuries, exploring how Black communities used the built environment to cultivate belonging and resist racial-spatial oppression. She also produces visual art that uses Black portraiture to challenge anti-Black representations and celebrate Black identity. Her work has been exhibited internationally and contributes to conversations on Black spatial histories, heritage, and architectural justice. She has also published work examining the histories of race, architecture, and belonging on university campuses.
