The 2011 Shirley Thompson Memorial Lecture

Women and the Web: Caught in the Same Old Traps or Building New Nets?

By: Reesa Greenberg, Adjunct Professor, Carleton and York Universities

The Department of Visual Arts of the University of Ottawa and The School for Studies in Art and Culture of Carleton University present the first annual Shirley Thomson Memorial Lecture, which will be given by Reesa Greenberg.

Dr. Shirley Thomson (1930-2010) was a leading national figure in the promotion of the visual arts in Canada.  For more than 40 years she worked tirelessly in the arts community, establishing a distinguished record of accomplishment.  She served as Secretary-General of the Canadian Commission for UNESCO (1985-87), Director of the National Gallery of Canada (1987-97), Director of the Canada Council for the Arts (1998-2002), and Chair of the Canadian Cultural Property Export Review Board (2003-07). Dr. Thomson was a Companion of the Order of Canada and Officier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, and Officer of Order of Ontario. Her strong and active presence was also felt in the Department of Visual Arts at the University of Ottawa, where she served as an Adjunct Professor.

Reesa Greenberg is an independent scholar, museum consultant, and writer with an intense interest in cultural theory and the theory of exhibition and museum practices. She has translated these interests into a variety of contributions within the academic and museum communities. From 1971 to 1999, she was Professor of Art History at Concordia University and is currently an Adjunct Professor at York University and Carleton University. She has also worked as a consultant on exhibitions at various museums, including the Jewish Museum in New York and the Art Gallery of Ontario.  In addition to publishing numerous essays on contemporary Canadian art and artists, she has written extensively on the theory and practice of exhibition experience in the contemporary museum. She is a co-editor, with Sandy Nairne and Bruce W. Ferguson, of the groundbreaking critical anthology Thinking about Exhibitions (Routledge, 1996)

Please join us in remembering Dr. Thomson, a distinguished and important member of the visual arts community in Ottawa.
