Five Kroeger College students will be spending the month of May staffing a Campaign Against Racial Discrimination in the Peruvian district of Urubamba, in the Andes mountains.
Ashley Gardner, Kaitlyn Finner, Olivia Tran, Chelsea Smith and Robyn Gibbard will be working with Nexos Voluntarios, a not-for-profit agency devoted to development and human rights progress in rural Peru. Nexos, together with the municipality of Urubamba and APRODEH, the most prominent human rights advocacy organization in Peru, was instrumental in securing the passage of a 2009 civic ordinance condemning the racial discrimination that is unfortunately persistent in the region.
The Kroeger College students will contribute to a strategic communication plan to raise awareness of the ordinance and encourage adherence to it. Their participation in the project has been made possible by College funds.
