Third year PAPM student Olivia Tran is back at Carleton after spending the Fall term in France, working for Veterans Affairs Canada as an interpretive guide at the Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland Memorial and Vimy Ridge National Memorial, the only two Canadian memorial sites not on Canadian soil. “It was such a great opportunity,” she says. “Immersing myself in that work environment, walking the public through trenches untouched since the First World War…it allowed me to learn so much more about our Canadian history that you just can’t learn in a classroom.” Olivia got the opportunity to work as a guide in France through the Federal Work Experience Program (FSWEP), a free job search website that allows students to gain experience in the public service. “I would recommend it to anyone,” she says, “especially since it gave me valuable international travel and work experience.”
