We asked Yavuz Topbas, one of our 2023 graduates of the PAPM program to tell us more about his experience in the program and his plans for the future. Yavuz graduated with High Distinction from the Bachelor of Public Affairs and Policy Management program where he specialized in International Policy Studies: International Relations and Conflict
What led you to choose a degree in PAPM?
I knew that the PAPM program would provide me with a clear opportunity pipeline to start a stable career in which I could use my intelligence to solve problems. I also wanted to learn about societal solutions rather than just learning about societal issues. I found PAPM to be a program for pragmatic individuals interested in creative ways to solve problems.
What were the highlights of your experience?
The highlight of my experience was meeting dedicated people who were solution-oriented. Many of my classmates were people who helped me develop as a person; Being in an inclusive environment in which I could gain new viewpoints was incredibly important for me. I also enjoyed getting into government and learning about how government works behind the scenes.
What did you learn that you found most important?
I learned about the interconnectivity of society on a structural level , and how good governance can lead the way for positive externalities within society. I learned the importance of regulation and law, and how public policy can be used in a way that leads to socio-economic development. All of these helped me develop a holistic and creative mindset for solving issues present in society.
What advice would you give to students who are thinking about joining the BPAPM program?
If you want a clear entry into the public service, this is the best program in Canada to do that, hands down (the internship opportunities you gain are worth their weight in gold).
What’s next for you?
I realized in university that I am interested in business, and now I am looking for ways to combine my strong knowledge of government with my interest in the private sector. I believe that my BPAPM degree will give me a unique edge in the private sector because of my understanding of interconnected systems. Ultimately, every business needs someone that understands how interconnected systems work, and I can see myself using my skillset in the fields of law, consulting, and sales. I see myself pursuing an MBA or a JD or any postgraduate program that allows me to tap into my creativity and interest in fixing things. I know that the BPAPM program has given me a strong, stable foundation which will allow me to try new things in my career.
