PAPM Language Requirement Survey

We invite you to complete this brief survey about fulfilling the language requirement; your responses will help us understand the current situation and inform future planning and next steps.

Language requirement in audit

You are invited to participate in a short survey about the language requirement in the BPAPM program. The purpose of this survey is to better understand how students meet this requirement, what challenges they may encounter, and how the process could be improved. Your feedback will help us evaluate current options and identify ways to better support students. The survey will also help you map your way to the fulfillment of the language requirement. The survey should take approximately 5–10 minutes to complete. The information collected will be used only for program improvement and planning purposes. Thank you for your time. * Personal information collected through this form will be used and disclosed by Carleton University under the authority of the Carleton University Act, 1952, and in accordance with sections 39, 41, and 42 of Ontario’s Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. The purpose of this data collection is to check the fulfillment of the language requirement by the students and to prepare for the future registration period. If you have any questions about the collection and use of personal information by Carleton University, please contact the Manager, Privacy & Access to Information, by phone at 613-520-2600 ext. 2047 or by e-mail via University_Privacy_Office@carleton.ca.

First of all, let's see what is your status in the program
Have you already fulfilled your language requirement?(Required)
Please check your audit and see if your language requirement is marked as fulfilled. It should have a green check mark by it. If your language requirement is fulfilled, you don’t need to answer the further questions of this survey.
The BPAPM Language requirement can be fulfilled in various ways. One of them is by obtaining a DELF certificate. Please let us know if you have the certificate.
If you have a DELF certificate, please send a copy of it to bpapm@carleton.ca if you have not already.
Have you done your French placement test at https://tls.carleton.ca/french_placement/index.php ?
This is a self-assessment questionnaire for placement in a French language course. This is the first step in registration for French courses at Carleton. If you don’t have a DELF certificate, you need to complete the placement test.
The language requirement for most of the BPAPM specializations is fulfilled by the completion of FREN 1100. However, you may need to take FREN 1001 and/or FREN 1002 to be allowed to register for FREN 1100. Each language course usually takes a whole year to complete. This is why we recommend that the PAPM students start working on their French as soon as possible. What language course are you planning to take in the fall of 2026?
If the placement test directed you to take French courses at the 2000 level, you may be able to have your language requirement waived. You can arrange an oral interview with the Carleton French Department (french@carleton.ca) and if they confirm that your language level is equivalent to the completion of FREN 1100 or FREN 2100, your audit will be adjusted.
If you selected the fourth option, we will send you a gentle nudge to schedule an interview and have the language requirement marked as fulfilled.
PAPM students with the specialization in the International Policy Studies have an additional language requirement. Please let us know if your current or planned specialization is in the International Policy Studies.
In addition to satisfying the French language requirement, students must successfully complete 1.0 credit in a language or possess an equivalent level of proficiency as demonstrated by successfully completing a language test. The language may be either French at a level higher than FREN 1100, or, with the permission of the Director, another language directly relevant to their studies.
If the language is taught at Carleton, you can reach out to the Department of foreign languages and schedule an interview to confirm your knowledge
You can also send your questions directly to bpapm@carleton.ca

Thank you very much for your time!
