We asked Liam Gordon, one of our newest graduates of the PAPM program to tell us more about his experience in the program and his plans for the future. Liam will graduate from the program on June 18, 2021 with a Bachelor of Public Affairs and Policy Management. Liam specialized in International Policy Studies: Security and Intelligence.
What led you to choose a degree in BPAPM?
I chose a degree in BPAPM given its range of specializations. When I was applying to university out of high school, I knew that I wanted to develop the skills needed to work within the Government and had a specific interest in learning about federal policing. The BPAPM program stood out from other degrees as it enabled me to choose focused classes in specialized topics related to security and intelligence, such as cybersecurity and counterterrorism, whilst also providing an interdisciplinary approach to issues of governance, international relations, and economics.
What were the highlights of your experience?
The main highlight of my experience was getting to compete with the university’s rowing team at the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston, Massachusetts, the largest rowing regatta in the world! The BPAPM program also enabled me to work as a student within the government through the Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP). This opportunity was incredibly rewarding as it allowed me to apply what I was learning in class to real-world issues, and helped to develop my ability to write concisely and network within the Government.
What did you learn that you found most important?
The most important skill that I learned from the BPAPM program was the ability to write concisely and communicate effectively. Developing these skills has significantly impacted my work within the Government by allowing me to confidently write and present professional reports and presentations, regardless of the topic at hand.
What advice would you give to students who are thinking about joining the BPAPM program?
I would suggest that students who are thinking about joining the BPAPM program consider the wide range of classes available within each specialization. The BPAPM program is quite diverse and has a place for just about everyone, whether it be security and intelligence or environmental policy.
What’s next for you?
I am currently employed as a Policy Analyst with the Public Health Agency of Canada’s COVID-19 Vaccine Rollout Taskforce and am in the application process to join the Royal Canadian Mounted Police!
