We asked Molly Turner, one of our recent graduates of the PAPM program to tell us more about her experience in the program and her plans for the future. Molly graduated from the Bachelor of Public Affairs and Policy Management with High Distinction in March 2021. Molly specialized in International Policy Studies: International Relations and Conflict.
What led you to choose a degree in BPAPM?: I chose a degree in BPAPM out of an interest in International Affairs and a desire to explore that field with a specialized degree. I also selected the program on the basis of its location in Ottawa in order to take advantage of professors with concrete, real-world experience in International Affairs and the possibility of finding work in my field during and after my degree.
What were the highlights of your experience? The highlights of my experience were absolutely the conversations I had in class surrounding current events and the applicability of class material to those events. I also really enjoyed making connections with students from different cultural and epistemological backgrounds that helped to introduce new perspectives into those discussions.
What did you learn that you found most important? Probably the most important skills that I learned in this program were related to engaging critically with academic sources and discussions. Learning how to distinguish legitimate and well-researched sources is crucial to remaining well-informed in any setting, not just academic.
What advice would you give to students who are thinking about joining the BPAPM program? I would suggest that new students enter with an open mind, particularly when it comes to specializing at the end of first year, and also be prepared to lean on each other for help. BPAPM is a challenging program, but study groups and essay buddies make all the difference!
What’s next for you? I am currently working full time in a position with the Canadian Intellectual Property Office International Affairs Team before I apply to graduate programs for Fall 2022.
