Research: Dr. Willmore investigates cellular “sensing” mechanisms of oxygen and oxidative stress at the protein level. Specifically, he examines protein modifications that are both catalyzed (hydroxylation) and non-catalyzed (modifications by reactive oxygen species) that control protein structure and function. Focus is placed on the modification and function of the nuclear factor, erythroid 2-like 1 (NFE2L1) factor which binds to the antioxidant response element.
