Mapping Criminological Engagements Within Radicalization Studies
A new article from Fahad Ahmad of the School of Public Policy and Administration and Professor Jeffrey Monaghan of the Institute of Criminology and Criminal Justice published in the British Journal of Criminology examines the use of criminological theories within the growing domain of radicalization studies. Criticized for its atheoretical or positivistic approach to explaining a process to violence, radicalization theories have been associated with racial profiling and Orientalist representations of Islam. Despite claims that radicalization has recently incorporated more robust theories from criminology, Monaghan and Ahmad’s research findings show that the study of radicalization has retained an adherence to more positivistic and pragmatic theoretical concepts.
