Supporting Women in STEM: Carleton’s WiE&IT Program Returns for Fifth Year

Carleton University’s Faculty of Engineering and Design is thrilled to announce the return of the Women in Engineering & IT (WiE&IT) Program for its fifth consecutive year!

Since 2021, the WiE&IT Program has empowered hundreds of women students in STEM at Carleton through free career and networking events, career-ready skill-development workshops, mentorship nights and access to a dedicated study lounge and graduate-student led study sessions.

The program continues to be one of the only of its kind in Canada, and would not be possible without the purpose-driven partnership of CAEGastops, Alstom, CIRACienaHoneywell, PCL ConstructionRoss Video, Amdocs, The Department of National Defence, EllisDonEricssonFord CanadaFullscript, Hydro Ottawa GroupMarch Networks, Nokia, Solace and WSP Canada.

Last year, the program contributed to a six per cent rise in women students in engineering and information technology undergraduate programs and six per cent rise in engineering and information technology graduate programs at Carleton, by helping strengthen the pipeline of students into the workforce. Many WiE&IT Program participants have gone on to secure Co-op placements, internships and full-time roles with our industry and government partners.

This year, the 2025–2026 program lineup features new skill-building sessions, mentorship opportunities and continued collaboration with leading companies who share the same commitment to supporting women in STEM.

Mentorship Nights

Mentorship nights are a key feature of the WiE&IT Program, offering women students the chance to engage in meaningful conversations with professionals working in engineering and IT. Hosted four times throughout the academic year, these events provide a welcoming space for students to connect and gain valuable insights into the industry. Expect to discuss topics such as how to make your resume stand out, technical presentation skills, interview tips and tricks, and thriving at work without imposter syndrome. These events help build confidence and connections, and support students as they prepare to enter the workforce.

Career and Networking Fair

Hosted in-person on campus, this yearly networking and carer fair is designed for women students in STEM who are looking to build and strengthen their professional connections. It’s a chance to explore potential career paths, learn about employment opportunities and gain insight into skills employers value, all while building your professional network.

Workshop Day

Workshop Day, a signature WiE&IT Program event, helps women students in STEM strengthen their employability skills and prepare for the transition into the workforce. Attendees will learn how to effectively market themselves to potential employers by learning tangible skills. Previous Workshop Day topics include: writing technical resumes, preparing for interviews, and combatting imposter syndrome. All attendees receive specialized materials at the end of the workshop and a certificate of workshop completion that they can add to their resume and LinkedIn profile.

Open House

Open House events give students a unique behind-the-scenes look at leading engineering and IT companies. Students will have the opportunity to explore the workspace, meet employees and learn about career opportunities. Open House events are the “ah-ha” moments for students, where they can see what they’re learning inside the classroom in action in the workforce.

Study Lounge

Located in the Engineering Design Centre, the study lounge helps women students develop personal connections, access graduate-level women study support (called Graduate Assistants), and do school work.

Graduate Assistants are Masters or PhD students in a STEM discipline at Carleton University, committed to supporting undergraduate and graduate women students with their academic journeys and highlighting campus resources.

Resume Book

Connect with potential employers through the Resume Book. Your resume will be put in front of employers who are looking for women students for upcoming co-op, internship, and job opportunities.

The resume book is open year-round so we encourage students to keep their CVs up to date and add new awards, achievements and roles as they do them.
