The Centre for European Studies Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence is pleased to announce a one-day symposium on Anti-Genderism in Today’s Europe, with scholars joining us from Hungary, Brussels and Munich. This is an in-person symposium on the Carleton campus.

Background: We have witnessed unprecedented changes in gender and sexual rights in many parts of Europe, affecting the lives of LGBTQIA persons in indelible ways. And yet, in recent years, new waves of resistance have surfaced against so-called “gender ideology,” queer theory, and trans rights. Often, as in the case of Poland and Hungary, the opposition has been mounted by illiberal groups intent on undermining democratic institutions. Recently, liberal democracies have become sites of contestation around gender equality, reproductive rights, sex education, and transgender rights raising essential questions about the role, place, and legacy of anti-discrimination policies in today’s Europe.

About the event: In this one-day symposium, Drs. David Paternotte (Bruxelles), Paula Villa Braslavsky (LMU), and Andrea Petö (CEU) will participate in a public roundtable on the current state of anti-gender mobilizations in Europe today. Following the roundtable, there will be a light lunch provided for all to enjoy!

About the presenters:

David Paternotte is an Associate Professor in Sociology at the Université libre de Bruxelles. He is currently studying anti-gender campaigns and attacks on academic freedom in Europe.

Paula-Irene Villa (Braslavsky) is a full professor and chair for Sociology and Gender Studies at LMU München. Her research focuses on the analysis of biopolitics, i.e. the ambivalent entanglements of society and soma, on Cultural Studies (Pop and Politics, Embodiment within Subcultures such as Tango), on Care & Gender, and on Science/Academia and Gender.

Andrea Pető is a Professor in the Department of Gender Studies at Central European University, Vienna, Austria and a Doctor of Science at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Her work focuses on European comparative social and gender history, gender and politics, women’s movements, qualitative methods, oral history, and the Holocaust.
