About Gary Nower, Associate Vice-President (Facilities Management and Planning)

Gary Nower joined Carleton University as Associate Vice-President (Facilities Management and Planning) in September 2018.  He holds several post-secondary degrees, including a B.A., B.Sc. from The University of Waterloo as well as a post-graduate M.B.A. degree.

Born and raised in Montreal, Gary has extensive experience in facilities and capital development management. His professional career includes accomplishments in capital planning, facilities and project management, and real estate development. Leading capital development projects, in excess of two hundred million dollars, Gary has additional expertise in the coordination and application of sustainable and best energy practices.

Gary is passionate about the built environment, creating sustainable campuses equipped for the next generation of students. He has managed award-winning sustainability and energy management programs, including the receipt of the silver rating in 2015 on the Sustainable Campus Index, which recognized Wilfrid Laurier University as a top player in the Coordination and Planning category. He was also instrumental in achieving top marks in the Rising Star category for scoring significantly higher in the 2014 STARS Assessment from the initial 2010 report.  Other accomplishments include the 2017 award for the most sustainable campus in Ontario, and the third-place award for most sustainable campus in Canada for the institution’s strong commitment to green transportation, water management and building area management.

Gary has specialized experience in facilities planning and capital programs that have resulted in LEED® Certifications enhancing the student experience and supporting the academic mission. He holds considerable expertise in process management optimization and technology implementation such as BIM, workflow assessment and energy performance contracts, which have reduced or eliminated deferred maintenance costs, improved service delivery and overall facility performance.

On a personal note, Gary has hung up the skates after a remarkable (not really) hockey career as a player and volunteer coach and in his free time he spends a lot of his time traveling with the love of his life, biking, hiking, paddling and hanging out with Pearl, the family pooch.
