Heating Start-Up

How Heating Systems Are Brought Online Each Fall at Carleton University

Facilities Management and Planning (FMP) has created a handy infographic to describe how heating starts up on campus each October. Keep reading for an accessible text version of this process.

It starts at the Central Heating Plant.

Here, steam is generated to heat buildings across campus.

Co-Generation Plant powers our campus.

The Co-Generation Plant produces 40% of the electricity used on campus.

Waste heat is recovered and used for heating.

Instead of waste, the heat from electricity production is captured to make steam for our buildings.

Steam travels through campus.

Steam is distributed through a network of insulated pipes in the service tunnels to most buildings on campus.

FMP gets campus ready for heating season.

Each year, the team from Facilities Management and Planning (FMP) works hard to shut down cooling systems and turn on heating systems. We keep Carleton comfortable all year long!

We start in Housing and Research buildings.

In early October, FMP starts with housing and research buildings and critical research spaces.

The team works through campus to start up heating in all buildings

This process takes approximately two weeks.

Our goal: a warm and comfortable campus

Thanks for careful planning and teamwork, all buildings are ready for the season ahead, supporting teaching, learning and research.
