Winners Announced, Construction Largely Complete
Facilities Management and Planning is pleased to announce that construction is underway on The Frame, a project realizing the vision of the winning P9 Greenspace Design Competition submission by fourth-year students Kylie Cozad and Amelie Murphy.
While construction is largely complete, and the structure is now available for use, some final finishings will be added in late September 2026. The community can expect to see a canopy, swing chair and additional carpentry added to the structure.
The Frame reimagines a space near the former P9 garage site as a welcoming and adaptable landscape where students can gather, pause, and connect. Evolving from the original concept of The Gathering Green, published as a Top 5 Finalist in the P9 Greenspace Design Competition, the project builds the idea of creating an open and inviting space, while minimizing its environmental impact.
Adaptable timber modules define a series of spaces for individual study, relaxation, and social interaction, allowing the site to support different activities throughout the day. The structure provides shade and shelter, with integrated seating and flexible gathering areas that encourage students to occupy the site in a variety of ways.
The Frame is designed to evolve alongside the students who use it, rather than functioning as a fixed structure. Its modular nature allows elements to be adapted, rearranged, or expanded as campus needs change. In this way, the project is not simply a new greenspace, but an adaptable piece of campus infrastructure that can grow with the community it serves.
About the Contest
Planning, Design and Construction (PDC) within the Facilities Management and Planning (FMP) team invited students to help imagine a vibrant hub for community life. This design competition challenged our campus community to envision a flexible, welcoming, and culturally respectful outdoor space that fosters student well-being, curiosity, and connection.
Participants were encouraged to explore how thoughtful design can enhance the daily experience of the
Carleton community, creating a place to gather, reflect, engage, and celebrate our shared campus
culture.
