The 3rd-year students in IDES3302 PROJECT III Design Studio course with Chiara Del Gaudio are collaborating with the Rideau Rideau-Rockcliffe Resources Community Centre (https://www.crcrr.org/).

The Rideau-Rockcliffe Resources Community Centre is an organization that provides a range of social supports and services with the aim of enabling the empowerment of residents, community resilience, and inclusion. The Centre has several activities that try to address food insecurity and well-being at the local level: a food bank, Ottawa Community Food Partnership, Social Harvest, and Good Food Box, among others. Notwithstanding, the growing food insecurity, poverty, and social isolation trends resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic catalyzed the need for the Centre to implement more and different types of efforts.

Students are designing systems to support the Centre in addressing food insecurity and promoting the well-being of the population that it attends.

Specifically,  they were asked to embrace the ethical-political qualities of design, to design for radical innovation and for social innovation, to envision possibilities (through visions, artifacts, etc.) of how to promote food security, well-being, biodiversity and to strengthen the social fabric through designed future scenarios and artifacts.

The process started with a field visit at the Centre on January 10, 2023: the first day of classes happened there and Luc Lalande (https://www.linkedin.com/in/luclalande/), innovator-in-residence of the Centre, introduced to students local challenges and provided an overview of the services currently in place.

Then on February 7, 2023,  a mid-term presentation of students’ works happened at the centre. Students presented the research done, the envisioned future scenarios and their initial concepts for the system.

Students will present the final outcome of their work in an event that will happen at the Centre, on April 4, 2023.
