A large number of applications are received each year from well-qualified international students for an extremely limited number of positions.

Admissions requirements

Only students with high honours (first or top second) in their country (alternatively defined as 80% or above from universities with a percentage system, 3.0 on a 4.0 G.P.A. system, or 15 out of 20 on the 20 point system) and a high ranking in their graduating class should consider applying.

If you have received an Offer of Admission, you will be required to submit a Course-by-Course evaluation (WES ICAP) from World Education Services (WES Canada).  You will be notified at that time, if this is the case.

Please review your Country specific document requirements for the WES ICAP prior to starting your application.

If you already have a WES evaluation (USA or Canada), you can add Carleton University, Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs as a document recipient.  Note that the evaluation must be a Course-by-Course evaluation (WES ICAP)

Applicants are encouraged to submit all post-secondary transcripts to WES for verification and evaluation upon initial application, regardless of the specific degree that is being requested from FGPA.

  • NOTE:  Carleton University reserves the right to verify any documentation for accuracy. Verification may include contacting the institution that issued the document, contacting the Ministry of Education in the country concerned, contacting the appropriate Embassy or Consulate, consulting a certified government translator and/or requesting third party verification by an authorized educational service agency.

The School is unable to provide any financial resources, including teaching or research assistantships, for international students. Preference will be given to applicants who have obtained a scholarship external to Carleton University, which would support their proposed degree program in the School of Industrial Design.

Students may consider applying for external funding. Please visit the Government of Canada International Scholarships website. Carleton University is unable to provide assistance to students applying for external funding.

The academic year starts in September and students first register in the Fall semester. Universities generally make their decisions concerning financial support by April 1st.

For registration in September, in most cases, student files should be completed by March 1st. Other applicants will be processed but will have little prospect of receiving financial support.

International students studying in Ontario are charged tuition fees of approximately $14,500 per year. We estimate that an international student will need a minimum of $26,000 (Canadian funds) per annum to cover tuition and living expenses.

Please visit the International Student Services Office website for information regarding working in Canada while attending Carleton University.
