Voice Services is heading up a project to move Carleton’s phone systems to Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP).

What is VoIP?

Voice over Internet Protocol or VoIP, is the technology that converts your voice (when using a VoIP phone) to data packets that can travel over the internet, or in Carleton’s case, allows voice & data to travel on the same network.

Why go with VoIP?

It has been suggested that VoIP is a revolutionary technology that is going to completely change the world’s phone systems. Already many business and homeowners have made the switch.  There are several reasons for this.

  • VoIP interacts with your computer.
Since VoIP phones run on our data network, they can interact with applications on your PC. For instance, with our customized phone application (called PC Companion) you can easily program buttons for speed calls, or launch websites or Microsoft applications and download this to your phone.
  • VoIP simplifies tasks
Many features offered on existing phones are difficult to use. With VoIP call transfer/conference, call forwarding, redial, and hands-free are a breeze. VoIP service includes caller ID and voicemail for all desktop sets. We also provide the ability to program multiple appearances of your personal extension so you never miss an important call when you’re on the phone.
  • Coming soon – new advanced features
Voice Services is planning to launch new advanced features this year such as:
    • ‘advanced voicemail’: integrates with your email by putting a copy of your voicemail messages in your email inbox.
    • ‘Work-from-home’ (sometimes called Tele-Worker): a VoIP phone at your home on Carleton’s network so it’s just like being in the office. This will be attractive to those looking to extend their office to the home transparently or offer flexibility in case of bad weather or health conditions which would still allow you to conduct business as though you were in your office.

Come out for our demo day!

We are planning to conduct a VoIP Demo Day to demonstrate all that VoIP has to offer. Keep an eye out for future details about this event!
