Mac users cannot send messages on MS Teams when connected to VPN – Fix / Work-Around available
July 6, 2020 — July 16, 2020
Location: | Carleton University |
Update as of July 8:
Last week ITS made changes to our VPN service, split-tunneling was turned on to increase capacity and improve performance for video conferencing, a subset of MAC users may experience a problem in MS Teams because of this.
Problem: Mac users connected to the VPN using the native Mac VPN client can experience “ fail to send” Chat messages in MS Teams.
Immediate workaround: Dropping the VPN connection solves the problem.
Fix: Delete their Mac VPN configuration and re-add as per: carleton.ca/its/help-centre/remote-access/vpn-for-mac-osx/ and their VPN client will now be “split-tunneling aware.”
Users can also download the Cisco AnyConnect VPN client https://cuvpn.carleton.ca/ to resolve the issue.
Users who require further assistance can contact the ITS Service Desk.

As of July 6: Once connected to VPN, Mac users cannot send Microsoft Teams chat messages. The result is an error message stating: “Failed to Send”. If VPN connection is dropped, message functionality resumes.
ITS is aware of the issue and working on a resolution.
