Congratulations to Carleton M.A. Legal Studies student, Danielle McKenzie, for her paper “Feeling the Effects of Canada’s Child-care Policy” which was awarded the inaugural Graduate Student Essay Prize at the CLSA’s 2013 Annual Meeting!

In early June 2013, the Canadian Law and Society Association (CLSA) accepted submissions from Graduate students at Canadian universities for the ACDS-CLSA Graduate Student Essay Prize. McKenzie’s winning essay, which discusses the notion of the ‘deserving poor’ through a historical analyses of child-care policy in Canada, argues that the concept of ‘deserving’ is fundamentally framed by the gendered devaluing of reproductive work within capitalism, specifically regarding the accessibility and affordability of child-care services. In recognition of the achievement, McKenzie’s essay will be published in the Canadian Journal of Law and Society/Revue Canadienne Droit et Société.
