TA Mentorship – Department of Law and Legal Studies 2015/2016

All Legal Studies PhD students are invited to apply for the position of a TA Mentor in the Department of Law and Legal Studies, a position in lieu of normal TA duties. The position is contingent on the approval by the Educational Development Centre (EDC). The TA Mentor is normally expected to fill this position for two or three consecutive years.

What Does a TA Mentor Do?

The TA Mentor Program, organized by the Educational Development Centre (EDC), is designed to help teaching assistants with discipline-specific support in the teaching and learning duties that they perform at Carleton University. TA Mentors are supervised by the EDC and collaborate with the Graduate Supervisor to coordinate TA training, organize departmental events (both social and academic), meet with the teaching assistants in their department, and facilitate training sessions.

Over the course of the academic year, the TA Mentor will:

  • Plan, organize, and facilitate TA trainings on pedagogical and professional subjects
  • Hold office hours
  • Support TAs in their work and help them to navigate complex problems
  • Work with the Graduate Supervisor and Associate Chair to resolve any issues arising from TA work
  • Organize and facilitate alternate training options (Peer Feedback, Peer mentoring, Microteaching, etc.)
  • Participate in TA events organized by the EDC
  • Organize departmental events (social and/or academic)

The TA Mentor has demonstrated strong pedagogical skills and is interested in developing them further, in supporting other TAs, and in strengthening a departmental culture of teaching excellence. The TA Mentor is a very good communicator and organizer who will work closely with different departments and offices within the university.
