Barb Higgins

January 2, 1963 – February 20, 2021

The Department of Law and Legal Studies mourns the passing of Barb Higgins and celebrates her many contributions to our department and to Carleton University over her long career.

Barb was the longest serving member of our wonderful front office administrative staff, having worked for the Department of Law and Legal Studies for over 30 years. Barb liked to note that, along the way, she served in acting roles in almost every administrative job in the Department. Not surprisingly, she knew just about everything about how our office works and was an invaluable resource. Barb helped orient all the new hires to our office, including the new Chairs! She will be remembered especially for her bright smile and the warm welcome she provided to visitors to our office. Barb worked on behalf of all of us, but she had a special place in her heart for our graduate students and especially our contract instructors, for whom she was often the go-to person in the Department.

Barb loved to share stories about her kids and to ruminate about her beloved Ottawa Senators. Barb’s favourite Senator was always Chris Neil, a tough, tenacious player dedicated to his team, who had a heart of gold. Barb was our department’s Chris Neil; her passing will leave a deep hole in our Department’s lineup.

The Department has set up an award in memory of Barb Higgins. This award will honour one student each year from our Department who demonstrates the qualities that made Barb so special – a dedication to supporting others and building community.
