This form is to be filled out by any students who wish to request that the Chair of the Department of Law and Legal Studies (the “Chair”) conduct an “informal appeal” of the decision of an instructor in the Department regarding a request for “academic consideration” pursuant to Carleton University’s “Academic Consideration Policy for Students in Medical or Other Extenuating Circumstances” (the “Policy”).

The Chair of the Department will only consider requests for informal appeal if they conform to the requirements of the Policy.  The Chair will assess any informal appeal using a “reasonableness” standard, pursuant to principles of administrative law.  To be clear, this means that the Chair will uphold decisions of instructors that may could be reached by a reasonable person, regardless of whether the Chair believes these decisions are “correct.”

The Chair will review and respond to the student with their decision within three (3) working days from the day the informal appeal was submitted. Note that working days do not include weekends, statutory holidays or extended university closure periods.
