Additional Mentors Include…

Justin Howe

I grew up in Toronto and always knew that I wanted to study law in some capacity. After making the move to Ottawa, I graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Law from Carleton University in 2011. While my intentions all along had been to attend law school once I graduated, I made the decision to do a bit of traveling first and soon put law school in the rear view mirror. I took a job with a large consulting company in account management, working with large construction companies and traveling around the world in my time off. After a few years I decided it was time for a change and joined Shopify to work on the Trust & Safety team, a branch of the legal department. In my current role as IP Operations Lead, I work as part of a team that deals with issues such as intellectual property infringement and sanctions screening among many others.

Hayley Gaucher

I’m a lawyer currently working as a Legal Policy Lead on the Trust & Safety team at Shopify. Our team assists with the enforcement and ongoing development of Shopify’s Acceptable Use Policy, which outlines what conduct and products are permitted on the platform. This can involve anything from researching complex legal and regulatory issues across various jurisdictions to debating what is “hateful content” to doing detective work on Reddit. When I started in Legal Studies at Carleton back in 2006, I had no idea this kind of work existed (and at that time, it probably didn’t)! I received a BA in Legal Studies in 2010 and then a Masters in Legal Studies in 2012. In 2015, I graduated from Osgoode Hall Law School and then summered, articled and briefly practiced labour and employment law at a Bay Street law firm. When I was looking to move away from traditional legal practice, Shopify presented a really interesting opportunity. I get to engage in all kinds of research, which has always been what I enjoy, and I get to grapple with some really interesting and constantly evolving content moderation issues.

Allison McLean

Allison McLean graduated from Carleton University in 2011 with a Bachelor of Arts with a major in Law with a concentration in Law, Policy, and Governance and a minor in English. She then attended Osgoode Hall Law School, during which she focused on Intellectual Property law and interned at the CBC. After graduation, she articled at the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC). She currently works as a Senior Policy Analyst at the CRTC in the Telecommunications Sector, where she works on files related to broadband deployment and the wireless industry.
