Gothic, the Abject and the Supernatural:
200 Years of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein

An International Symposium

October 31- November 2, 2019

Carleton Dominion-Chalmers Centre
Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada

After two centuries, the Frankenstein myth—and indeed Gothic horror in general—has proven remarkably resilient, continuing to fascinate the Western cultural imaginary in literature as well as visual art, music, film, drama, women’s studies, cultural studies, and related disciplines. Themes from Mary Shelley’s novel, which have resonated across the spectrum of cultural history, will provide fertile ground for a fresh examination that brings these disciplines together. This conference seeks to foster discussion and debate about this extraordinarily influential tale in an environment of multidisciplinary perspectives and engagement. Twenty scholars from the UK, Greece, Canada and the USA will converge to discuss diverse topics including:

  • Frankenstein and the Gothic in music, film, visual arts, and architecture;
  • The Gothic Imagination, conceptions of the Gothic;
  • Mary Shelley and her creative milieu;
  • Frankenstein, disability and neuro-diversity;
  • Related gender issues, then and now

The conference will welcome two distinguished keynote speakers from the U.K.:

  • Marie Mulvey-Roberts (Professor of English Literature, UWE, Bristol. England, U.K.)
  • Kevin Donnelly, Professor of Film and Film Music, University of Southampton, Hampshire, England, U.K.)

On the evening of Thursday, October 31st, our conference participants and attendees are invited to attend the Ottawa premiere performance of Andrew Ager’s opera “Frankenstein” at the downtown Carleton Dominion-Chalmers Centre (corner of O’Connor and Cooper streets).

Public can view our program here.
