About Us

The study group on Music and Media (MaM) was initiated by Prof. Dr. Emile Wennekes and launched in Amsterdam in 2009 as an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary forum. Subsequently, the IMS Directorium officially accepted MaM as a study group. MaM welcomes a broad variety of subjects, methodologies and perspectives relevant to the interrelationship between music and media. The study group annually organizes a conference in a different country, each edition in cooperation with local initiatives. Carleton University is pleased to host the fifth annual MaM conference centering on the topic of Music on Small Screens. This conference represents the first time that the Music and Media Interest Group has met in North America (in the past, its meetings took place in Amsterdam, Berlin, Lisbon, and Turin). Music on Small Screens will bring together international academic experts working on music and media in non-cinematic contexts, on television, computer and cell-phone screens (among others) and in this intermediality, is a first for Canada (and Carleton).

Carleton University and the School for Studies in Art and Culture are pleased to welcome keynote speaker Karen Collins, Canada Research Chair in Interactive Audio at the Canadian Centre of Arts and Technology, University of Waterloo (Playing with Sound: A Theory of Interacting with Sound and Music in Video Games with MIT Press, 2013). Music on Small Screens would also like to welcome our participants, including specialists from such diverse academic fields as music and media studies (film and screen media), media and communication studies, anthropology, computer science and cultural management. Speakers have travelled from within Canada and the United States, as well as from the United Kingdom, Ireland, Italy and the Netherlands to participate.
