Klaus Kytayko successfully defended their thesis, “Beyond Sex/Gender: Trans (Non)Identity and the Aestheticized Life,” examining the limits of binary and cisnormative approaches to sex, gender, and embodiment.
The thesis argues that conventional understandings of biological sex are not simply neutral descriptions of bodily difference, but are shaped by socially and historically situated gendered assumptions. Across four chapters, the research examines how sex and gender work together to establish and reinforce stable categories of identity, while exploring how transness can disrupt these structures and open possibilities for thinking about embodiment beyond fixed identities.
Through its engagement with feminist, trans, and critical theories of embodiment, the thesis contributes to ongoing scholarly conversations about identity, gender, and the possibilities for imagining embodied life otherwise.
