Congratulations to Political Science BA student James Prowse, who was selected as one of three recipients of the first annual Schuman Challenge Essay Prize. The contest was organized by the European Union Delegation to Canada. This year’s essay prompt was: “The European Union – a global power? If not, what does it need to become one?”
In his essay “Problematizing liberal institutionalism and the European Union integrated global enhancement strategy”, James argues that the EU is not currently a global power, but can become one with policy and institutional reforms. The essay discusses the current problems within the liberal institutionalist approach to regional integration, and then moves to propose an action plan to enhance the EU’s global influence.
As winner of the Schuman Challenge, James will be participating in a study visit to Brussels early 2022, and will be touring the key institutions of the EU.
