Political Science Teaching Assistant Orientation

The orientation is primarily intended for new TAs in Political Science (whether or not this is your home department), but experienced TAs are encouraged to attend as well, especially in light of the move to online instruction.

– Getting started and staying on track: the professor/TA relationship; the mid-term meeting
– Working with undergraduate students: the TA/student relationship; communication practices; some dos and don’ts
– Challenges … and benefits (?) of the online teaching environment
– Student engagement TAs
– Balancing TA duties and your own academic workload
– Facilitating discussion groups and tutorials
– Introduction to grading approaches and expectations
– Student support services
– Teaching workshops offered by the Educational Development Centre
– TA Union (CUPE 4600) information on your rights and responsibilities as TAs
– Your questions

This orientation can count towards the five hours of TA training that you are expected to undertake (and are paid for) each term. Sign up for the orientation through the TA Management System in Carleton Central to ensure your hours are counted.

2:30-2:35 Welcome from Professor Elinor Sloan (Chair of Political Science Department) and Professor Hans-Martin Jaeger (Associate Chair)

2:35-3:00 Information from Darlene Moss (PSCI Department Administrator), Brookes Fee (PSCI Graduate Administrator), Narges Zare (President of CUPE 4600), and Taylor Green (PSCI TA Mentor 2020-21 and Ph.D. student)

3:00-4:00 Panel Discussion featuring professors Aaron Ettinger, Laura Macdonald, Hans-Martin Jaeger (PSCI faculty), and Salma el Refaie (PhD student)

4:00-4:10 Break (unfortunately, no refreshments provided … keep your own handy)

4:10-4:55 Rotating Discussions in Breakout Rooms (led by experienced TAs) on issues relevant to the TA experience: Kayla Dold, Leonard Halladay, Asif Hameed (PSCI graduate students)
