Location:A602 Loeb Building
Cost:Free

The Department of Political Science will be holding its new 2024 TA Orientation on September 20, 2024, 2:30-5:30pm, Loeb A602.  The workshop will explore the roles, responsibilities and strategies of TAs in the Political Science department.

The event is coordinated by Dr. Fiona Robinson, the Political Science Associate Chair and Tomas Hatala, your TA Trainer for this term: the reference point for all your questions regarding TAing. If any questions ever arise, please contact at tomashatala@cmail.carleton.ca.

The agenda features words of experience from instructors and past TAs, a note from your union, as well as a workshop on specific pedagogical challenges TAs might face in the coming terms.

The schedule (detailed schedule provided at the event):

  • Opening remarks by Dr. Hans-Martin Jaeger, Chair and Dr. Fiona Robinson, Associate Chair
  • Panel on what instructors need from TAs by Dr. Aaron Ettinger and Ali Elyasi
  • Q&A
  • Panel on how TAs can succeed from experienced TAs
  • Presentation from CUPE 4600 about your rights and responsibilities
  • Workshop with Tomas Hatala on pedagogic strategies to help you succeed in the classroom

The orientation is an excellent opportunity to explore not only what the role of the TA entails but also how you can turn it into an enjoyable and fulfilling part of your graduate studies.

All Political Science graduate students working as TAs in the 2024-25 academic year are required to attend.  The workshop counts towards your paid pedagogical training hours.

See you on September 20th!
