Who Studies Canadian Politics? Faculty Diversity in a Political Science Subfield

March 17, 2022 at 2:30 PM to 4:00 PM

Cost:Free

Kenny Ie, University of British Columbia

2:30 ET via Zoom

In this presentation, I discuss my recent work assessing faculty diversity in the Canadian politics subfield of political science. This work examines the numerical presence of women and racialized scholars in the subfield using publicly available data on permanent faculty at Canadian universities. These data indicate that Canadian politics has thus far underperformed in both areas. At 37 per cent of permanent faculty, women are significantly underrepresented in Canadian politics, though they constitute a higher share of early career faculty compared to mid or late career, suggesting improvements over time. Meanwhile, racialized scholars are almost invisible in the subfield, constituting less than four per cent of permanent faculty, far below figures for both the discipline and university professoriate. These findings should inform equity, diversity and inclusion efforts within the Canadian politics subfield and political science generally.

Dr. Ie has been teaching Canadian politics in the department of political science at UBC Vancouver campus since 2017. He obtained his PhD from the University of Western Ontario in 2018, with prior degrees from McGill and Simon Fraser. His research and teaching interests are in Canadian and comparative political leadership, executive institutions, federalism, and methodology. Dr. Ie’s current work focuses on cabinet committees as sites of representation, ministerial coordination and legislative scrutiny, and equity and diversity in Canadian political science. His work has appeared in the Canadian Journal of Political Science, European Political Science Review, and Commonwealth & Comparative Politics, among others.

This event is sponsored by the Bell Chair in Canadian Parliamentary Democracy.
