Mentorship Program Coordinator, Jaku Konbit

BA (HONS) Political Science, Concentration in International Relations; Minor Philosophy, 2023

As I reflect one-year since my June 2023 graduation, I admit my journey has been both exciting and humbling. It began with me already in part-time employment as youth engagement officer at Jaku Konbit, a renowned Ottawa-based African-Caribbean-Black community development organization. I was immediately promoted to full-time Operations Officer, an expanded role through which I supported the Executive Director in managing programmes addressing systemic challenges faced by clients of all ages.

I gained invaluable experience engaging government and community leaders and stakeholders. Highlights include anchoring Jaku Konbit’s leadership of the National Capital Region and Eastern Ontario’s contribution to the Canada Black Justice Strategy; delivering an Afro-centric summer camp to children ages 6-12; and delivering Canada’s largest Kwanzaa Celebration.

After six months, I was promoted to Mentorship Program Coordinator, successfully matching mentees with optimal mentors, and engaging government and community stakeholders to broker their personal and professional skills development opportunities. I have also delivered public presentations on topics including Human Rights and Black Excellence; as well as twice facilitating a formal dialogue forum between Ottawa Police Service and local Black Youth.

I am humbled by recognition received including the 2024 Black History Ottawa Community Builder Award; the Martin Luther King DreamKEEPERS Youth In-Service Award; and the Mayor of Ottawa formally designating me as one of several Heroes of Ottawa.

My experience at the political department provided me with a solid foundation in understanding governance and community dynamics, which has been instrumental in my career. The skills and knowledge I gained have empowered me to effectively engage with municipal, provincial, and federal stakeholders and make a meaningful impact in my community.
