Campus Safety launch new bicycle theft prevention campaign
July 8th 2013 – For immediate release
The Campus Safety Services launched a new bicycle theft awareness campaign directed at cyclists who commute to Carleton University.
The new campaign which comes in the form of a handle bar hang tag provides a diagram and tips on the best locking methods, information on Carleton’s free bicycle registration and secure bicycle compound. Throughout the months of July and August officers will be distributing hang tags to bicycles throughout campus, starting with areas with higher reported cases of bicycle theft.
The number of bicycles reported stolen this year is consistent with the average of reported cases from previous years. The method in which thieves are stealing bicycles by is also consistent. Over 95% of reported thefts were the result of a cable of chain lock being cut.
The Campus Safety Services is encouraging cyclists to use a strong U-Lock instead of cable locks.
A copy of the new hang tag can be found below.
