Lock It or Lose It audit finds vehicles at risk

Oct. 4, 2013 – For immediate release

The Campus Safety Services handed out over 520 Lock It or Lose It audits on Tuesday, Oct , 1 as part of Safety Week.

The Lock It or Lose It program’s aim is to reduce theft from vehicles by conducting individual audits of parked vehicles found on campus. The audit looks for four opportunities that make a car more vulnerable to be targeted by thieves. These categories include unlocked vehicles, vehicles unlocked with keys in the vehicle, open windows and vehicles left with valuables left in plain sight.

Of the vehicles audits over 12% were found with valuable left in plain sight. Valuables may include GPS devices, sunglasses or even loose change. In the past year, Campus Safety have conducted over 2000 audits on campus, educating drivers on how to reduce the risk of becoming a victim of theft.

Drivers are reminded to always park in well-lit areas, close and lock all doors and windows and remove valuables from sight.
