Bike theft prevention tips

Jul 27, 2014 – For immediate release

The Campus Safety Services has received 17 reports of stolen bicycles from Carleton University’s campus since May 1, 2014.

Bicycle thieves are targeting bicycles which are secured to racks with cable locks. Cable locks, which are easily cut using a standard set of bolt cutters, do not offer a high level of theft protection. Cyclists are recommended to use a strong “U-Lock” which is more difficult to cut.

Cyclist should secure their bicycle to bike racks by placing the U-Lock through the front wheel, frame and rear wheel. Remove all removable parts including the seat, lights and bags.
