During the week of January 19, 2015 the Campus Safety Services conducted Lock It or Lose It audits in response to recent thefts from vehicles.

Lock It or Lose It is an award winning crime prevention initiative developed with the support of Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC), aimed at encouraging drivers to take simple precautions to help prevent crime and victimization.

Officers from the Campus Safety Services conducted over 120 audits throughout the week in parking lots across campus. “Over 35% of vehicles we audited had valuables in plain sight making them potential targets for thieves” Community Liaison Officer S/Cst Mark Hargreaves,  said after reviewing the results of the week’s audits.

Tips & Hints:

  • Remove valuables and shopping bags from view. This includes loose change and electronic devices such as IPods, cell phones and GPS navigation systems.
  • Never leave your vehicle running and unattended.
  • Close windows and lock the doors.
  • Never leave your car or house keys in your vehicle.
  • Park in well lit areas with pedestrian traffic

The Campus Safety Services are investigating a number of Thefts from Vehicles which have occurred in the parking lots surrounding the Athletics complex.

Since January 19, 2015 there have been four reports of locked vehicles being broken into and valuables removed from within.

The Campus Safety Services would like to remind the community to always remove all valuables from plaint sight when parking their vehicles. Valuables could include bags, loose change, electronics etc.

All incidents have been reported to the Ottawa Police Service.
