Stay Safe, Ride Smart: Protecting Your Bike at Carleton University
With the cycling season in full swing, Campus Safety Services is reminding our community to take proactive steps to protect their bicycles from theft. As bike theft continues to rise across Canada, we are enhancing awareness and promoting the use of secure infrastructure on campus.
Ottawa Bike Theft Snapshot
- Thousands of bikes are stolen annually.
- Thefts spike between May and September, when more people cycle to work or school.
Secure Bike Compounds on Campus
Carleton offers three secure bicycle compounds located:
- Across from the Andrew Fleck Daycare at Athletics
- Beside Teraanga Commons (formerly Residence Commons) on Campus Avenue
- Between Dunton Tower and Azrieli Pavilion on Library Road
These compounds are access-controlled and CCTV-monitored. Access is available through Parking Services for a small fee.
Tips to Prevent Bike Theft
- Use secure compounds whenever possible.
- Use a U-lock to secure both the frame and wheels.
- Double lock your bike when possible.
- Register your bike with Project 529 Garage.
- Avoid overnight parking in bike racks.
