Secure Your Bike

Bike theft can happen in seconds, but proper security can significantly reduce your risk.

Lock It Right
• Use a heavy-duty U-lock or hardened chain lock.
• Secure the frame and rear wheel to a solid, immovable object.
• Choose well-lit, high-traffic areas whenever possible.

Register Your Bike
Registering your bicycle helps deter theft and increases the chances of recovery if it is stolen. Free bike registration is available through Project 529 Garage. Be sure to record your bike’s serial number and upload current photos.

Use Secure Bike Storage
Carleton University cyclists can take advantage of the campus’s secure bicycle storage facilities through the Bicycle Compound Program, providing an additional layer of protection for your bike.

Ride Safe

Cyclists share the road and have the same rights and responsibilities as other vehicle operators.

Be Seen, Be Predictable
• Equip your bike with a bell.
• Use a white front light and a red rear light or reflector when riding 30 minutes before sunrise or after sunset.
• Signal all turns and lane changes with clear hand gestures.
• Wear bright or reflective clothing whenever possible.

Lock it. Register it. Store it. Ride it safely.

A few minutes spent securing your bike and practicing safe riding habits can help ensure you—and your bicycle—have a safe and enjoyable cycling season.
