Reclaiming the Intersectionality Between Disability and Sexuality

Monday, October 16, 2023 from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm

Participate in Carleton’s fifth annual Inclusion Week from Oct. 16 to 20. The goal of Inclusion Week is to raise visibility and awareness of the value of human rights work and EDI. This year’s theme is Doing the Work: reflecting, relinquishing, and reclaiming power in inclusion. View the full calendar of events and register for the event here (registration is required)

As part of Inclusion Week, join us to watch a few episodes from the first season of the Netflix program Special, followed by open discussions about identifying as disabled and queer.

This event will be facilitated by our guest panelists:

Andrew Gurza

Andrew is an award winning Disability Awareness Consultant and the Chief Disability Officer and Co-founder of Bump’n, a sex toy company for and by disabled people. Their work has been featured on BBC, CBC, Daily Xtra, Gay times UK, Huffington Post, and several anthologies. Andrew has guested on a number of podcasts including Dan Savage’s Savage Love and Cameron Esposito’s Queery, and has spoken all over the world on sex, disability and what it means to be a Queer Cripple.

Brett Babcock

Brett was a trampolinist, travelling the world and winning medals; however, as he prepared for a competition in Sydney, Australia, Brett’s life changed forever in an instant when he landed on his neck, dislocating his C5 and C6 vertebrae. Today, Brett continues to inspire through his perseverance and newfound passion as a quadriplegic marathon racer. Brett will be joining us to discuss his journey as a queer disabled man.

Arleth Ruiz

Arleth is a third-year Bachelor’s student at Carleton; majoring in Sociology, and minoring in Economics. After a life-changing diagnosis of schizophrenia in 2020, after a ten-year career in marketing, she made the decision to pivot her life pursuits to that of making the world a better place and chose to return to school. Proudly queer and disabled; she is always bringing positive energy and she is interested in researching the intersection between Safe Supply and a Universal Basic Income with hopes that it would lead to new social programs being created.
