Tobin Ng, a sociology and journalism student, was selected as a recipient of a FASS Undergraduate Summer Research Internship for 2020 and will present at the FASS Undergraduate Summer Research Internship Presentation event on September 17. Tobin’s presentation is titled “Figuring Out Who We Are: Identity Construction of Chinese Canadian Youth in Richmond, BC.” Under the supervision of Professor Xiaobei Chen, Tobin conducted Skype interviews with 10 Chinese Canadian youth from Richmond to explore their understandings of their identity, race and culture. Tobin’s study yields insight into how youth exercise agency by reproducing, reconsidering and rejecting white supremacy as manifested in intracultural difference and xenophobia toward Richmond’s Chinese Canadian residents.
