Get to know Anil Varughese, Assistant Professor at Carleton SPPA. In a broad sense, Professor Anil’s research seeks to understand how public policy can be harnessed to create equity-enhancing outcomes in the developing world.
In this interview, Professor Anil Varughese explains how observations from his home state of Kerala, India sparked his early interest in public policy, how he began his work at the SPPA as a lecturer, the various courses he currently teaches, as well as shares what these courses can offer students. Get to know Jerald Sabin, Assistant Professor and Graduate Supervisor for SPPA’s Indigenous Policy and Administration program.Professor Sabin has various research interests, including how the relationship between Indigenous Peoples and Canadian settler peoples shapes policy processes, intergovernmental relations, and Canadian political institutions.

Get to know SPPA Associate Professor Marc-André Gagnon. Professor Gagnon has a wide breadth of academic interests, including Social and Health Policy, Pharmaceutical Policy, Innovation Policy, Political Economy and more.In this interview, Professor Gagnon discusses the start of his academic journey. How he came to study in various fields, and how such experience primed him for his career today in policy research and at the SPPA. Get to know Jennifer Stewart, Director and Professor at the SPPA.Professor Stewart’s research concentrates on health and labour economics, and recently the impact of maternal employment on maternal outcomes.
In this interview, Professor Stewart discusses how her early interest in mathematics prepared her for a career in economics. Joining the SPPA faculty in 2003, Professor Stewart has since taught analysis, methodology, and various economic-based courses. She also discusses how these foundational courses are imperative to further policy research.

Get to know Robert Sepherd, Associate Professor and Graduate Supervisor for SPPA’s Public Policy and Program Evaluation program.Robert’s research spans public management and governmental reform, Indigenous public management, ethics, and policy and program evaluation.
In this interview, Professor Shepherd discusses his career transition from federal public service to the SPPA, joining the faculty in 2007. Professor Shepherd also speaks on the courses he teaches in public management, ethics, policy and program evaluation, and financial management. He also describes his memories from coaching Carleton students in the Public Administration Student Case Competition.

Get to know Graeme Auld, Professor at Carleton School of Public Policy and Administration.In this interview, Professor Auld discusses how his early academic experiences sparked his interest in researching environmental politics and policy, global environmental governance, and the rise of private governance and authority.

Get to know Alexandra Mallett, Associate Professor and Graduate Supervisor for the MA-SE program at the SPPA.Professor Mallett’s research concentrates on sustainable energy and climate policy.
In this interview, Professor Mallett discusses the courses she currently teaches in the MA-SE program, which combines engineering and policy to prepare students to fully integrate sustainable energy technologies in society. Also, Professor Mallett speaks about the MA-SE Capstone Seminar course, which sees students working as a team to solve problems presented by outside organizations. Finally, Professor Mallett talks about why she and students find these courses exciting, and unique situations researchers can sometimes find themselves in.
