Sandra Robinson is one of five recipients of a 2017 Carleton University Teaching Achievement Award granted by the Office of the Provost. This competitive award recognizes faculty members who have a strong record of outstanding teaching, and enhances excellence by providing financial support for the development of an innovative new teaching project.

Over the next three years, Robinson will use the funds associated with the award to develop an innovative pedagogical model for teaching digital media and data analysis using what she describes as a ‘platform approach’ to data mining and visualization.

The new course, COMS 4503: Data Mining and Analytics, runs for the first time in Fall 2016, is part of the suite of professional media workshops in the B.CoMS program, and provides opportunities for students to develop technical skills in media research as well as challenge them to learn how to tell interesting research stories with data and to navigate the ethical dilemmas associated with big data. It has exciting opportunities for scalability that will benefit students throughout our undergraduate and graduate programs. robinson-teaching-award
